CLARKE CANCELS THEATRE DEBUT
DOCTOR WHO star NOEL CLARKE called off the premiere of his first play at a recent U.K. theatre festival so he wouldn't steal the spotlight away from other emerging writers.
The actor-turned-screenwriter was due to debut his first play at the Louder Than Words Festival at the Tristan Batest Theatre in London last month (Feb09).
But the Kidulthood filmmaker cancelled his show shortly before opening because he was garnering too much press attention - leaving other talents to go unnoticed.
He says, "Once it got out that I was going to be there, there was a lot of interest. The showcase is supposed to be about promoting younger, more up-and-coming writers and that buzz started to detract from them. I didn't want to take away the credit."
But the 33-year-old is adamant he will one day stage the production: "At the moment, I've got the script just sitting on my laptop, along with another one that I've done since. It's definitely something I'm going to do in the future. I'm just not sure when."
