CHANNEL 4 AXES POPWORLD

Channel 4's Popworld has become the latest television music show to be given the chop.

The music programme's demise follows the BBC scrapping music institution Top of the Pops and, more recently, ITV1 axing Saturday morning music show cd:UK.

The show served as an opportunity for original presenters Simon Amstell and Miquita Oliver to demonstrate their talents and establish themselves in other projects. Current presenters Alexa Chung and Alex Zane are out of a job, however.

Popworld was notable for its slightly offbeat approach to the wacky world of pop music, especially thanks to Amstell's left-field style.

He once conducted an interview with Lemar called 'Lemar from Afar' in which all the questions were fired long-distance through a megaphone from one end of a car park. A less-than-amused Lemar fumed at the other end.

The interview typified the irreverent feel of the show, which has now gone the way of other television music shows.

Acknowledging this trend, Channel 4 said in a statement: "The show has performed very successfully… but we are keen to continue to use our T4 platform as a launch pad for new music formats that reflect our audience's tastes and the way in which they consume music."
