CHAHINE STILL CRITICAL AFTER HEAD OPERATION
LATEST: Egyptian filmmaker YOUSSEF CHAHINE is still in critical condition after undergoing head surgery on Tuesday night (17Jun08).
The celebrated 82-year-old was admitted to hospital in Cairo on Sunday (15Jun08) with a brain haemorrhage.
He was then flown to Paris, France where he had an operation to remove a sudbural hematoma to alleviate pressure, according to Egyptian embassy official Hani Nimatallah.
But a second hematoma had not been removed and Chahine is fighting for his life at the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of the French capital.
Chahine won international acclaim for his work in pioneering Egypt's film industry and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at France's Cannes International Film Festival in 1997.
The star is also credited with launching the career of fellow Egyptian legend Omar Sharif who shot to fame with roles in 1962's Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago in 1965.
