CARRERAS' ACHIEVEMENTS HONOURED AT CLASSICAL BRIT AWARDS

Opera star JOSE CARRERAS received a standing ovation as he accepted a Lifetime Achievement honour at the Classical Brit Awards 2009 on Thursday (14May09).
The Spanish singer, one of the legendary Three Tenors with Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, bowed as he accepted a gold statuette from the Duchess of Cornwall at the ceremony, held at London's Royal Albert Hall.
Welsh vocalist Katherine Jenkins performed at the event, before Carreras concluded the evening with a rousing version of Chitarra Romana.
Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard were also honoured - their score for Oscar-winning Batman movie The Dark Knight triumphed in the Soundtrack Of The Year category.
And a group of British soldiers became the first non-professional musicians to ever scoop a Classical Brit Award when they won Album Of The Year for Spirit of the Glen: Journey, which was recorded during their tour of duty in Iraq.
