CAINE SLAMS HOLLYWOOD
SIR MICHAEL CAINE has hit out at the state of the US film industry, branding Hollywood's latest efforts "banal, formulaic" and "gross". The veteran British actor believes American movies are dumbing down for their audiences, and he fears films "for people who understand dialogue" are going straight to DVD or television, because movie moguls assume they are not sensational enough. Caine still adores old films including CASABLANCA, saying "I remember every detail. Who today writes such lines? "I can't think of one (contemporary film) I could see again." And he became even more "depressed" when he looked at the current box office top ten in the US, which includes BEERFEST and SNAKES ON A PLANE, adding, "I was struck by how stunningly banal and formulaic it all was. "Some of the pictures are so gross."
