BROADCASTERS CONCERNED ABOUT MICROSOFT'S PORTABLE DEVICE
Microsoft is planning to make TV shows, music and other content available for its upcoming Zune device -- its so-called iPod killer -- free, with advertisers paying the freight, the New York Post reported today (Tuesday), citing unnamed sources. According to the newspaper, Microsoft is already encountering resistance to its plans from broadcast and cable networks, One unnamed TV executive told the Post what while the TV industry has "an interest in building a competitor to the iPod ... it gets a little dicier when trying to compete for ad dollars." Microsoft has said that it plans to launch the Zune device -- which reportedly can wirelessly download music and video without the need of a computer -- by the end of the year.
