BRITAIN SILENCES THE POGUES
THE POGUES festive track FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK has been censored by British broadcasters over fears of upsetting homosexuals. The Christmas hit - released in 1987 - has been edited by the BBC to remove the word "f*ggot" from a lyric sung by late star Kirsty MACColl. The network claimed even though the song was 20 years old "the step had been taken as this is a word that members of our audience would find offensive." The song has been re-released and is tipped to become U.K. Christmas number one.
