BLACK EYED PEAS TOP SINGLES CHART

The Black Eyed Peas have topped the UK singles chart this week.

The group's latest release Boom Boom Pow topped the chart on its first week of release and follows the success in the US where the single charted at number one in the Billboard Hot 100.

In the album chart Greenday also went straight to number one, the Official Charts Company announced this evening.

The band's eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown, topped the chart after only two days on general release.

Greenday's last album, 2004's American Idiot, previously debuted at number one in both the US and UK, and has sold over 12 million copies to date.

Topping the chart on Sunday after only being released on the Friday before has only happened on four other occasions during the last five years, the Official Charts Company added.

Most recently the feat was achieved by Metallica's 2008 album, Death Magnetica. US rapper star Eminem also achieved the feat twice, with Encore in 2004 and Curtain Call – The Hits in 2005.
