BERTINELLI'S BOYFRIEND OFFERED TO 'STEP ASIDE'

VALERIE BERTINELLI's boyfriend was so convinced the actress and her ex-husband EDDIE VAN HALEN were still in love with each other when they started dating, he insisted they give their relationship another chance. Tom Vitale offered to "step aside" after one special family evening suggested the former couple were still fond of each other. As part of a recent tribute evening to Bertinelli, thrown by style magazine Ladies Home Journal, Vitale recalled, "One night, the three of us were standing in the kitchen and you could just tell by the way they were interacting and their shared loved for Wolfie that they had something special. "I told her that night, 'Listen, if you can reconcile this, I want you to know that I'll be out of here.'" Bertinelli added, "Ed and I both said, 'No! That's not going to happen.'" Vitale continued, "She ended up going to bed and Ed and I were alone in the living room. Ed played his guitar for me and we stayed up late listening to his music and I thought it was him telling me, 'I'm OK with this.'"
