BERESFORD TO DIRECT ARCHER'S JAIL SCRIPT
Australian director BRUCE BERESFORD has teamed up with controversial British author JEFFREY ARCHER to make a biopic about legendary mountain climber GEORGE MALLORY. The DRIVING MISS DAISY director is collaborating with Archer on his screenplay WALKING OFF THE MAP. Former Member of (UK) Parliament Archer was found guilty of perjury in July 2001 and subsequently spent two years in prison. Beresford explains, "It is a wonderful screenplay about George Mallory, the Everest climber. "I have been working on that with Jeffrey for about two years. "It is a very, very good script he wrote when he was in jail." British mountaineer Mallory died on Mount Everest in June 1924 - it is unknown whether or not he reached the summit before his death.
