BATTLE OF THE SEQUELS AS ICE AGE AND TRANSFORMERS FREEZE OUT BOX OFFICE COMPETITION
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS has tied with the TRANSFORMERS sequel to open at number one on the U.S. box office chart over the Independence Day weekend (03-05Jul09).
The third installment of the Ice Age franchise was already making waves upon its release on Wednesday (01Jul09), when it set a new record for the biggest opening day gross for an animated film with $13.8 million (£9.2 million).
Its popularity continued as families took advantage of the three-day holiday weekend, taking Ice Age 3 to number one alongside last week's (ends28Jun09) chart-topper Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $42.5 million (£85 million).
Johnny Depp's new gangster movie Public Enemies grossed $26.2 million (£17.5 million), rounding out the top three.
