BALDWIN TO HELP END NEW YORK HORSE CRUELTY

Actor ALEC BALDWIN has offered to invest his own money to improve the conditions for horses which are used to carry tourists through New York's Central Park.
The 30 Rock star hosted an event in Manhattan for animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Wednesday (18Jun08), at which a documentary exposing the horse-drawn carriage trade was screened.
The industry is under fire from local business leaders, politicians and animal rights advocates, who say that the frantic streets of New York are no place for nervous animals to haul around heavy carriages.
Baldwin insists he's not seeking to ban the trade, and reveals he's willing to write a cheque if city officials can ensure the money will improve conditions for the creatures.
He tells WENN, "I don't have a problem with the carriage trade. If they remove all the cars in Manhattan, and build a farm with an acre of land for each horse to graze, I will invest my own money.
"Passions run high in this issue... It's loud and vulgar because they know they are wrong."
Baldwin joins Chrissie Hynde and Pink who have both campaigned for PETA against horse-drawn carriages.
