BACKSTREET BOYS DENY 'BOY BAND' LABEL
BACKSTREET BOYS star NICK CARTER insists the group was never a "boy band" - and instead were a 'vocal harmony group'. The band shot to fame in the 1990s with their self-titled first album and have sold over 75 million records worldwide - but Carter is admant they didn't take their musical cues from groups like British five piece Take That. Carter says, "We were never a boy band. We always thought of ourselves as a white vocal harmony group, we didn't model ourselves on Take That or anything. "Maybe things started off a little boy band-ish but after a while you shed that."
