AWARD GIVES ELBOW SALES LEAP

Rock band ELBOW have seen sales of their album THE SELDOM SEEN KID soar - just a day after they landed the prestigious MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE.
The band scooped the coveted award at the ceremony in London on Tuesday (09Sep08) and sales of their LP have since risen by 260 per cent on retail giant Amazon.co.uk, taking it to number one on the website's chart.
And other records in the Mercury shortlist - including dub producer Burial's Untrue and Knee Deep In The North Sea by jazz four-piece Portico Quartet - have also shifted more copies since the prize-giving.
Julian Monaghan, music manager at Amazon.co.uk, says of Elbow's award-winning album, "The Mercury Prize is judged on musical merit rather than sales but this album has been met with as high a level of public demand as it has critical acclaim."
The award is given to the "most accomplished album" of the last 12 months. Previous winners include Primal Scream (Screamadelica), Portishead (Dummy), and Franz Ferdinand (Franz Ferdinand).
