ARMANI EDITS BRITISH NEWSPAPER

Italian fashion king GIORGIO ARMANI followed in the footsteps of stars including U2 frontman BONO by guest-editing British newspaper The Independent. Armani took on the temporary editorship for the broadsheet's special Africa edition, of which half of the revenues would go to fighting Aids in Africa. The paper included an article on the daily hardships of African women, as well as an article by Hollywood actress ASHLEY JUDD. Actor and activist GEORGE CLOONEY and Microsoft head BILL GATES also contributed to the special edition. Armani expressed his sadness "as an ordinary man" by the state of the world around him. He writes, "I see a place where the innocence of childhood is being eroded by hardship and sickness, by fear and danger and poverty." The designer also hosted a fashion show in London on Thursday night (21SEP06) to showcase a new range of clothing for the anti-Aids initiative Project Red, featuring Hollywood actor LEONARDO DiCAPRIO and singer BEYONCE KNOWLES.
