ARCTICS GO COLD OVER GLOBAL WARMING
Musicians have long been voicing their opinions on world events; once upon a time it was a plimsoll-wearing long-haired hippy called JOHN LENNON trying to save the world by lying in a bed.
But today's struggles against global warming have sent the musical veggie humanitarian brigade into overdrive, with bands such as COLDPLAY and U2 devoting as much time to campaigning as they do songwriting.
Although much of this could be seen as charity bandwagon jumping, the ARCTIC MONKEYS are one group that have decided green is not a cool enough colour for them and have had a furious falling out with climate-change campaigners APE (Artists' Project Earth) over the use of one of their songs.
The charity album, which also features songs from the usual environmental suspects COLDPLAY, DIDO, U2 and RADIOHEAD, has a version of the Arctics' DANCING SHOES track.
But after seeing the Club Havana-style video accompanying the song, which was played on GMTV, the Arctics have decided they "don't do advertising" and want it pulled, according to the Mirror.
Maybe it has more to do with the Arctics' own strict marketing laws which saw them become a word of mouth and internet phenomenon by deliberately avoiding standard publicity, but one member of their management reportedly told APE exactly what they thought of the situation by screaming "f**k global warming" at them on the phone.
But while the bad-tempered boys from Sheffield seem to be damaging the good name of musicians in the fight against global warming, Swedish DJ ERIC PRYDZ has scored plus points by calculating the carbon emissions created by his next single PROPER EDUCATION and has donated a sum to a New Zealand wind farm to compensate.
