ALMODOVAR NERVOUS OVER THEATRE ADAPTATION

Director PEDRO ALMODOVAR was so attached to his hit film ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER he found its transfer to the London stage a "very strange" experience. The play is adapted from Almodovar's 1999 film and tells the story of Manuela, a nurse who loses her 17-year-old son Esteban in a car crash. She decides to give up her job to track down Esteban's estranged father. The show is currently running at London's The Old Vic Theatre, but the acclaimed Spanish filmmaker concedes relinquishing control of the film to playwright Samuel Anderson and director Tom Cairns made him nervous. He says, "It's strange for me, the way these characters are alive on stage in a different language and a different culture and a different medium. "It felt very strange the first time I saw it; the second time, I felt better."
