AKON WENT GAGA WAITING FOR LADY'S HIT
Pop sensation LADY GAGA shocked her mentor AKON - it took a year for her smash hit JUST DANCE to take off.
The Smack That star signed New York singer GaGa - real name Stefani Germanotta - to his Kon Live record label in 2007, after she helped him cure a bout of writer's block.
And the rapper knew he had a hit on his hands when Just Dance became a favourite on the U.S. club scene - yet he struggled to persuade radio bosses to playlist the tune.
He says, "We were holding on to Just Dance for a year before it became a hit. It was a huge club record but radio would not pick it up and I couldn't understand. I was like, 'This is the biggest club record on the street'.
"I knew we just had to keep pushing it and in the end it was the fans picking up on it that put it where it went, not the radio execs."
