AKON APOLOGISES FOR TEEN DANCE SCANDAL
LATEST: R+B singer AKON has apologised to teenage fan Danah Alleyne following their raunchy dance at a Trinidad concert last month (Apr07), insisting he had no idea how young she was.
The Smack That singer hit controversy when he performed a sexy sequence with 14-year-old Alleyne at a gig on 12 April (07), prompting the Caribbean country's Prime Minister to order a formal investigation into the incident.
Earlier this week (begs07May07) communications firm Verizon dropped their sponsorship of his tour with Gwen Stefani following the furore.
In a statement released last night (09May07), Akon says, "I want to sincerely apologise for the embarrassment and any pain I've caused to the young woman who joined me onstage, her family and the Trinidad community for the events at my concert.
"It was never my intention to embarrass or take advantage of my fans in any way, especially those under the age of 18. That is why we tried to make sure that the club did not admit anyone under 18 in the audience. Somehow, that standard was not met."
