ADELE HEADS NEW TALENT LIST

Nineteen-year-old soul sensation Adele has topped the BBC's Sound of 2008 poll to find the most promising new music talent in the UK.

The singer, who graduated from BRIT performing arts school in Croydon in May 2006, topped a list chosen by almost 150 British music writers and broadcasters.

Signed to XL Recordings, home to Radiohead, the White Stripes and Jack Penate, Adele won the Brit awards critics' choice prize in December 2007 as the act most likely to emerge in 2008.

And after strong support from Radio 1 and Radio 2, she has now headed a list previously won by Keane, Corinne Bailey Rae and Mika.

Paul Rees, editor of Q and part of the voting panel, told the BBC Adele's sound was "refreshing" in comparison to "identikit bands who want to sound like the Libertines".

"That Adele also has a voice that could stop traffic makes it doubly so," he said.

Fellow soul singer Duffy was named in second place in the poll while indie hopefuls the Ting Tings and Glasvegas finished in third and fourth.

The panel were asked to choose their favourite three acts, with artists ineligible if they had achieved a UK top 20 single or were already famous for any reason.

The Sound of 2008 top ten:

1 Adele
2 Duffy
3 Ting Tings
4 Glasvegas
5 Foals
6 Vampire Weekend
7 Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong
8 Black Kids
9 MGMT
10 Santogold
