Veteran British pop star ADAM ANT was so miserable after his record label dropped him in 1985, he came close to killing himself. The singer, real name STUART LESLIE GODDARD, was plagued with mental illness throughout his early career. And he reveals that the cancellation of his record contract sparked off a period of deep depression and panic attacks that almost caused him to commit suicide. Goddard says, "During the height of my fame in the early 1980s, hard work and sex had kept my mental illness in check. I enjoyed a string of hits and slept with dozens of women, including actresses AMANDA DONAHUE and JAMIE LEE CURTIS. But after my record contract was terminated I was left floundering. "There were times when I lay in bed terrified, hearing the gun say 'Go on, load me. Squeeze the trigger and it'll all be over.' But I couldn't. Instead, I'd drive, shaking, anywhere... to a coffee shop or the ocean. "Once there, I'd sit and cry."
