WILSON HONOURED WITH HIS OWN STREET

Factory Records legend TONY WILSON is to have a street named after him in his native Manchester, England. Whitworth Street West, once the address of Factory Records' legendary nightclub the Hacienda, will be renamed either Tony Wilson Way, Anthony H. Wilson Way or Wilson Street West under plans currently being considered by the city council. Label boss Wilson, who was responsible for signing artists including Joy Division and Happy Mondays, died earlier this year (Aug07) after losing his battle with cancer at the age of 57. A council spokesperson says, "We need two thirds of people to agree but I have gone round all the blocks and I am confident people will want to make history on that street." Peter Saville, the designer behind Factory Records' most iconic artwork, is also leading plans to set up a Wilson Academy in the city to work with local children on arts and music projects.
