GENESIS - WEATHER WARNING FROM WOMAD ORGANISERS

The organisers of this weekend's Womad music festival have warned people attending to make sure they are prepared for the adverse weather.

The three-day world music event, which began today, is being held at Wiltshire's Charlton Park for the first time after 17 years at Rivermead in Berkshire.

While Wiltshire has largely escaped the devastating flooding seen in central England over the past week, organisers are advising festival-goers to bring their wellies and waterproof clothing.

"Please come prepared for wet weather and mud, and bring plenty of warm and waterproof clothing, and waterproof items to transport your belongings in," a message on the festival's website said.

"Two days of heavy rain have deteriorated the condition of the ground, so we advise people coming in cars to attach a tow eye to their vehicles if they have one, just in case.

"Wellies are crucial but the vibe is good!"

Womad, set up by former Genesis musician Peter Gabriel, has been held in 27 different countries in its 25-year history.

"Pure enthusiasm for music from around the world led us to the idea of Womad in 1980 and thus to the first Womad festival in 1982," Gabriel, who is among the artists performing this weekend, said.

"The festivals have always been wonderful and unique occasions and have succeeded in introducing an international audience to many talented artists."
