Academy award-winning film The Queen starring Dame Helen Mirren will be shown on ITV1 this autumn.

The movie, which won Dame Helen an Oscar for best actress, was made by Granada Films and Pathe Pictures.

The film is directed by Stephen Frears and written by Peter Morgan, who also worked on The Deal and Henry VIII.

It was extremely well-received by critics when it was released last year and became one of the most successful films of 2006.

Depicting the aftermath of Princess Diana's death on September 1st 1997, The Queen shows Elizabeth II dealing with the situation which had shocked the whole country.

Michael Sheen stars as fresh-faced prime minister Tony Blair, who comes into conflict with the Queen over the best way to deal with the public grief.

As well as winning an Oscar, Dame Helen scooped a Bafta award for her portrayal of the Queen.

She had experience of playing a monarch having also starred as Elizabeth I in an earlier film.
