TAKE THAT - TAKE THAT, MIKA + RONSON ARE EARLY WINNERS AT THE BRIT AWARDS

Pop acts are leading the way at this year's (08) Brit Awards with TAKE THAT, MIKA and MARK RONSON picking up early prizes. Reformed boy band Take That saw off competition from rock rivals Arctic Monkeys, Muse and Kaiser Chiefs to take home the first gong of the night at the London ceremony on Wednesday (20Feb08). Group member Mark Owen was delighted to take home the award, telling the crowd at London's Earl's Court it had been a difficult year for the band. He said, "We have all worked hard, still trying to dance after all these years. Howard (Donald) punctured a lung on the last tour so we appear here bruised and battered, but dead chuffed (very happy)." Meanwhile, Mika was presented with the coveted award for Best British Breakthrough Act by actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, beating fellow pop stars Leona Lewis and Kate Nash to take the prize. The Grace Kelly singer opened the 2008 Brits with a spectacular performance of his hit single Love Today, complete with a giant dance-hall themed stage set. He was then joined by Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto for a duet of her hit single Standing In The Way Of Control. Producer Mark Ronson also added a new trophy to his collection, taking home the statuette for British Male Solo Artist. Meanwhile, rapper Kanye West scooped the Best International Male Solo Artist gong and Kylie Minogue was awarded Best International Female Solo Artist, beating artists including Alicia Keys, Bjork and Rihanna. Soul newcomer Adele has also been honoured, picking up the Critics Choice Award for the most promising new artist - one of two prizes which were announced prior to the ceremony. The event at London's Earl's Court is being hosted by rock couple Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne and their famous children Kelly and Jack.
