STING STUNG BY SONGWRITER

Rocker STING has been accused of stealing ideas for THE POLICE's hits from a Nevada singer/songwriter.
Roy Smith claims he befriended Sting in the late 1970s after the then rock star wannabe checked out a Smith concert in Reno.
The Nevada singer reportedly spent the night chatting to Sting about his life, including his dalliances with a prostitute called Roxanne and how he wrote messages to his widowed mum and placed them in bottles.
Smith insists those tales became the basis for The Police hits Roxanne and Message In A Bottle.
Smith has approached Reno police officials, according to TMZ.com, claiming Sting agreed to give him royalties for the songs, but never did.
A police spokesman says, "Initial review of the report indicates that the statute of limitations of any potential crime in this matter has expired. The alleged victim may have to pursue the matter through civil litigation."
Sting's lawyers have denied all the allegations.
