Punk icon PATTI SMITH's 1978 album EASTER was almost banned from record stores because her own record company staffers hated the artwork and the tracklisting.
The defiant Because The Night singer refused to bow to company pressure about the song Rock N Roll N**ger or the sight of armpit hair on the cover.
She says, "The rackjobbers didn't want to stock the album because you could see my armpit hair on the cover and then the back cover had the title Rock N Roll N**ger.
"I was warned if I didn't airbrush the hair and retitle the song, the album wouldn't sell... I was never interested in compromise. Changing Easter was never an issue for me."
The album became Smith's biggest seller.
