KURT COBAIN - SMELLS LIKE A KURT COBAIN MOVIE

The troubled life of the late Kurt Cobain will soon receive its first official big-screen treatment, it has emerged.

Universal Pictures has snapped up the rights to Heavier Than Heaven, Charles Cross' acclaimed biography of the Nirvana frontman and has signed David Benioff to script the movie, according to Variety.

Cobain was placed at the forefront of the grunge movement in the early 90s, after the mix of his growling guitar and disaffected lyrics combined with the thumping rhythm section of Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic won the hearts of a generation.

However, the Seattle native struggled to cope with his fame and after a long, crippling battle with heroin, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994, leaving behind wife Courtney Love and daughter Frances Bean.

Though not the first film to deal with Cobain's life and death, the as-yet untitled movie will be the first to officially tell his life story.

Nick Broomfield's documentary Kurt and Courtney examined the mysterious circumstances of his death, while Gus Van Sant's Last Days starred Michael Pitt as a suicidal rock star with an uncanny resemblance to Cobain.

Universal Pictures have not confirmed whether the star's music rights have been acquired.

Benioff scripted The Kite Runner and Spike Lee drama 25th Hour, as well as the upcoming spin-off movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
