Long-term warring friends Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed together onstage in a rare reunion concert in Washington.

The pair sang together with a choir during songs from Simon's Graceland album and the musician embraced the choir and Garfunkel after the performance.

According to the Reuters news agency, Simon introduced his longtime bandmate by saying: "My dear friend and partner in arguments, Art Garfunkel."

Garfunkel then took up his position next to Simon for a rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, their last number one single.

They then played Cecilia from the same album in an emotional performance with Simon on guitar and Garfunkel holding the microphone.

Last night's concert was scheduled to coincide with Simon receiving the US Library of Congress' first Gershwin award which recognises contributions to music.

The pair's hits over the years include The Sound of Silence and Mrs Robinson, but their career was dotted with frequent arguments over musical differences.

They have both enjoyed successful solo careers and embarked on a reunion tour in 2004.
