Martin Scorsese's hotly-tipped documentary about the Rolling Stones has had its release date put back to next April for promotional reasons.

Shine a Light was provisionally pencilled in for a September release, but as the Stones are currently in the middle of a European tour, this was put back for the band to have more time to spend on the film.

Scorsese has already shown a rough cut to the band and it is understood the on-the-road documentary is completed.

However, the notoriously busy group will have more time to promote the project with a spring release.

A spokesman for Paramount, which is distributing the movie, said: "We think April is a better date for it. There's more time for the band to support it.

"We have a fantastic trailer and poster. We need time to get the movie out and permeate the marketplace."

The movie was filmed during two New York shows in 2006 and includes guest appearances from White Stripes frontman Jack White and Christina Aguilera.

Despite the delay of this particular release, there's still the annual clutch of Rolling Stones releases this year.

The Bigger Bang DVD came out earlier this month, while Mick Jagger is preparing for the release of his solo greatest hits collection in October.
