DOCTOR WHO - RSC LOOKS TO RAISE £1M TO RENOVATE MAIN THEATRE
The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is looking to raise £1 million in order to fund the rebuilding of its main theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon
Last April, the RSC staged its last play at its main theatre before closing down the venue for a £100 million renovation. The plans aim to upgrade the Grade II listed building, which was built 76 years ago, into a Theatre Village.
The new design will accommodate a new thrust stage, a riverside walkway as well as changes to the venue's entrance.
The BBC reports that the theatre company has succeeded in raising the required £100 million and was now hoping to secure a further £10 million, of which £1 million is expected to come from donations from the public.
This year, the RSC's performances of Hamlet at the Courtyard Theatre were booked out months in advance after it was confirmed that Doctor Who star David Tennant would be playing the Prince of Denmark in the renowned play.
The RSC had to urge theatregoers to avoid purchasing exorbitantly priced tickets on Ebay as surging demand for seats at the performance made fans of the actor resort to desperate measures.
