RESTORED SILENT MOVIES TO BE SCREENED IN LONDON SQUARE -- FREE

As part of the 51st London Film Festival, several historic films are to be shown in London's historic Trafalgar Square Thursday and Friday nights. Sponsored by the festival, Film London, the Mayor of London, the London Development Agency, and the London Screen Archives, silent features and shorts produced in London between 1910 and 1929 will appear on a screen set up near Nelson's Column, including Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Blackmail. (While the film is regarded as the first sound movie ever produced in the U.K., Hitchcock originally shot it without sound; then reshot some of the scenes with sound later.) Silent-movie pianist Neil Brand is to provide live piano accompaniment to the films at the free screenings.
