REM have knocked Duffy off the album chart's top spot with the band's first studio album in four years.

Accelerate went straight to number one, pushing Welsh soul singer Duffy's Rockferry to number two.

REM 's album was initially available on social networking application iLike, making the album freely available to anyone using iLike.com, Facebook, iTunes or any other site that offers an iLike application.

In the singles chart, Estelle held onto her position at number one with American Boy, while her album Shine entered the album chart at number six.

Flo Rida stayed at number two with Low, while Kooks rose from number 71 to number three with Always Where I Need To Be.

Another new entry was Mariah Carey's Touch My Body, at number five.

Last week the track became the singer's 18th number one in the US, which means she has now had more American chart-toppers than any other act except the Beatles.
