Last night's Comic Relief raised a record £40.2 million after a marathon television fundraising extravaganza which featured a host of stars, including Tony Blair.

The prime minister participated in a Catherine Tate sketch in which "bovvered" teenager Lauren visits Downing Street on work experience.

Rather than providing the usual cringeworthy experience viewers usually suffer in a politician-turns-actor routine Mr Blair's rendition of the "I ain't bovvered" routine proved surprisingly adept.

"Face, bovvered? Top shop, Centre Parcs, trainers, rich tea, trainers, bandages, police – I ain't bovvered!" he told a gobsmacked Lauren.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Blair said: "Meeting Lauren was an experience. She didn't seem 'bovvered' by anything but I hope she will put her time spent at No. 10 to good use."

The prime minister's routine was one of many star-studded acts on the night as performers rallied to the Comic Relief standard.

Kate Moss featured in a Little Britain sketch, Jamie Oliver ate junk food with Ricky Gervais and Daniel Craig also featured.

Take That and the Killers performed while Girls Aloud and the Sugababes opened the night with their version of Walk This Way.

Meanwhile the winner of Comic Relief Does Fame Academy was also revealed as Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.
