NIRVANA's performance at the 1992 Reading Festival has been voted the band's greatest moment by fans in the NME.

The magazine's poll, conducted to honour what would have been the 40th birthday of lead singer KURT COBAIN, saw their headlining gig 15 years ago emerge as the fans' favourite.

Other performances of the band, who were only together for a few years at the end of the 80s and early 90s, included the infamous MTV UNPLUGGED gig and their TOP OF THE POPS show in which they sang the wrong words.

And the fans also voted for several songs and special moments of the band's career as highlights, such as SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT, the NEVERMIND album cover and the day the album knocked MICHAEL JACKSON from the top of the US charts all making the top ten.

Cobain, who died on April 5th 1994 after a long battle with drug addiction, is still idolised by fans who adored him not only for his music but, ironically, for shunning the fame that came with the group's success.
