Rap artist The Game has been sentenced to 60 days in jail after admitting gun charges.

The 28-year-old pleaded no contest to felony possession of a firearm in a school zone, relating to an incident in February 2007.

The Compton rapper - real name Jayceon Terrell Taylor - was charged with the offence after allegedly pulling a gun on an opponent during a basketball game at a school in south Los Angeles.

He reportedly hit Rodrick Shannon, a player on the opposing team, in the face during a fight before fetching a gun from his Cadillac Escalade and threatening to shoot Shannon.

The Associated Press news agency reports that The Game was also given 150 hours of community service and ordered to spend three years on probation.

Two further charges were dismissed by Los Angeles superior court judge Fred Wapner as part of a plea deal.

The former G-Unit member earned two Grammy nominations following the release of his 2005 album The Documentary.

Though the multi-platinum success of the album shot The Game to fame, he has been involved in high-profile feuds with a number of fellow rap stars, including Jay-Z, Joe Budden, Ja Rule and Death Row Records impresario Suge Knight.

And after he called homosexual men "faggots" and "not real men" on Jo Whiley's show on Radio 1 in 2006, the DJ was forced to issue a swift public apology on the station's behalf.

The BBC governors' committee later said his comments were "very offensive, completely unacceptable and clearly homophobic".
