Los Angeles police have confirmed they are addressing allegations that Britney Spears may have been drugged.

The singer's mother Lynne claimed in recent court papers that Britney's manager and confidante Sam Lufti had been medicating her, as well as restricting her access to phones and verbally abusing her.

And after court officials managed to serve a restraining order to Lufti - who had been in hiding since Britney's hospitalisation in January - Los Angeles police said the allegations of drugging are "being considered".

Police captain Kyle Jackson added that a formal investigation has not yet been launched and no formal suspects have been identified.

Britney's mother Lynne submitted a six-page declaration to the Los Angeles superior court earlier this month to request that 33-year-old Lufti be restrained from contacting Britney in any way as he has "inserted himself into my daughter's home, life and finances".

"Sam told [friend] Jackie and me that he grinds up Britney's pills, which were on the counter and included Risperdol and Seroquel," Lynne writes in the court papers.

Risperdal is a sleeping pill, while Seroquel is used to treat bipolar disorder.

"He told us that he puts them in her food and that was the reason she had been quiet for the last three days," Lynne continues. "She had been sleeping. He told us that the doctor who is treating her now is trying to get her into a sleep-induced coma so that they could give her drugs to heal her brain."

Britney, 26, was admitted to the UCLA medical centre under observation for what was believed to be severe bipolar disorder, with her original 72-hour admission extended to a 14-day stay, though she was later released.

While the Toxic star's father James still holds temporary conservatorship of his daughter's estate, she has recently been permitted to see her two sons for the first time in more than a month after reaching an agreement regarding visitation rights with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
