Former tabloid editor Piers Morgan has won the celebrity version of The Apprentice in the US.

Donald Trump, America's answer to Sir Alan Sugar, hailed his winner as a "vicious guy".

The billionaire had likened Morgan's final tussle with country singer Trace Adkins as "good versus evil; American versus Britain".

"You're tough, you're smart, you're probably brilliant, I'm not sure. You're certainly not diplomatic," Trump said of Morgan, who raised more than the 13 other contestants combined.

"But you did an amazing job and you beat the hell out of everybody. And you won by far more than anybody."

Morgan himself, a judge on America's Got Talent and its UK alternative Britain's Got Talent, presented himself as an "evil, obnoxious, disgusting Brit".

Together the celebrities, which included UK boxer Lennox Lewis, Hollywood actor Stephen Baldwin and KISS singer Gene Simmons, raised more than $1 million (£500,000) for charity.

Morgan had chosen the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides support to families of US troops, as his charity.

The former editor of the Daily Mirror received help from Britain's Got Talent co-judge Simon Cowell and Sir Richard Branson during the season's run.

Morgan was only selected for the series, The Apprentice's seventh in the US, after getting fired from the one-off UK celebrity version by Sir Alan.
