"PACKBACK JOURNALISM" MAKES GAINS

In the latest demonstration of so-called backpack journalism, a TV anchor/reporter for a station covering the Tampa-St. Petersburg area of Florida, sent a report to her station from Ft. Lauderdale Monday on the run-up to this week's national college football championship game using her own camera, laptop, the Skype service, and her Blackberry. "It all looked just great on air," the Poynter Institute's Al Tompkins wrote on his blog Wednesday. "This type of reporting marks a new day," he added. "obviously, it is also a potential cost-saving way to use fewer people and to send in live reports without using expensive trucks." In an interview with the reporter, Janie Porter of WSTP, Tompkins asked about the advantages and disadvantages of working solo. She replied, "When the shooting, logging, writing, editing, Web story and live shot are all dependent on one person, that brings on the pressure. On the flip side, when things turn out well, it is rewarding because I know that I did it all by myself."
