OPERA DUO DROP OUT
LATEST: Opera star ROBERTO ALAGNA has threatened to snub celebrated Italian venue La Scala for good after the audience booed his performance on Saturday (09DEC06).
Alagna was starring in an adaptation of VERDI opera AIDA, but was whistled down by the public on the show's second ever production in Milan and has since withdrawn from the production.
He says, "I am breaking my ties with La Scala. I will not do MANON LESCAULT as planned.
"The audience is intimidating. It reminds me of the fear of expressing oneself freely that existed in the Communist Bloc."
Now his wife, fellow opera singer ANGELA GHEORGHIU has compounded his questionable behaviour by unexpectedly dropping out of the lead role in the Royal Opera's DON CARLOS in London next year (07).
A spokesperson for the company says, "Angela has withdrawn from this role.
"She says she wasn't quite sure it was a role for her and she was slightly uncomfortable with it."
The couple, who married in 1996, have been nicknamed the 'BONNIE and CLYDE of opera'.
