Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has confirmed that Neil Diamond will play at this year's festival.

The 67-year-old US singer, famous for hits such as Sweet Caroline and America, will play on Sunday 29th June.

Diamond is the first act to be confirmed for the famous festival at Worthy Farm in Pilton.

Mr Eavis, 72, also claimed that he has booked a hip-hop "legend" from New York to headline the event.

He would not however be drawn into speculation that the artist was the rapper Jay-Z.

Diamond's addition to the line-up follows a trend of older artists performing at the event.

In recent years Rolf Harris and Tom Jones have played and famously Dame Shirley Bassey performed last year in wellington boots in an attempt to overcome the terrible weather conditions.

The Glastonbury festival will take place between 27th and 29th June.
