UK band Muse picked up two prizes at last night's MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich.

The Muscle Museum stars won the best headliner award as well as the gong for the best UK and Irish act.

The Devon band beat international stars the Foo Fighters, Beyonce Knowles and Justin Timberlake in the best headliner category and edged out rivals the Arctic Monkeys, Mark Ronson and the Klaxons for the second award.

Troubled star Amy Winehouse, a surprise addition to the show's list of performers, sang Back to Black at the awards ceremony and picked up the artist choice award.

Surprisingly, neither Knowles or Timberlake managed to pick up any prizes, despite the latter leading the pack with four nominations and having been a frequent winner at awards shows since going solo.

American singer Avril Lavigne picked up two awards for the best solo and most addictive track. The 23-year-old Girlfriend star piped both Rihanna and Nelly Furtado in both categories.

Umbrella star Rihanna took home the gong for ultimate urban while Maneater singer Furtado won the best album prize.

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the show which saw performances from Babyshambles, the Foo Fighters and Nicole Scherzinger.
