The Darjeeling Limited, starring Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman, expands into 650 theaters today (Friday) and, in doing so, adds a 13-minute short that had previously been only available on Apple's iTunes store, but which was meant as a prologue to the movie. Darjeeling, written and directed by Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou) received mixed reviews when it opened in limited release last month. A.O. Scott in the New York Times observed that it was "precious" in both senses of the term -- at once "unstintingly fussy, vain and self-regarding" on the one hand, but, on the other, "a treasure: an odd, flawed, but nonetheless beautifully handmade object as apt to win affection as to provoke annoyance. You might say that it has sentimental value." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times awarded it 3 1/2 stars and remarked that it "meanders so persuasively it gets us meandering right along." But in the New York Post, Kyle Smith dismissed it as "a slow train to Dullsville that makes all local stops."
