JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS - MEYERS STUNNED INTO SOBRIETY BY MOTHER'S DEATH

World Premiere of 'The Tudors: Season 2' - Arrivals
New York City, USA ....
Actor JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS kicked his alcohol addiction after the death of his mother - because her untimely demise gave him the determination to do more with his life.
The Irish star's mum Geraldine Meyers-O'Keeffe suffered a stroke in November (07), and Meyers turned to drink in a bid to cope with the news - resulting in his arrest for drunken behaviour at a Dublin, Ireland airport hours later.
She passed away unexpectedly two days later (20Nov07). Charges of public drunkenness and breach of the peace against Meyers were later dropped.
And the Mission: Impossible III actor - who entered rehab in early 2007 to battle alcoholism - insists he has been sober ever since.
He says, "I haven't even thought about drinking since my mother passed away. Drinking is not the way forward for me at all.
"Since I was 27 I must have been drunk maybe a dozen-and-a-half times - but when I do, I'm like Bambi. I'm all over the place, hopeless, like a 16-year-old kid. People notice.
"Now drink doesn't fit into where I want to go. I want to do something useful with my life. Drinking is not synonymous with that.
"To be honest, I just leave it alone and hope people will, too, but I don't really care. The whole drinking thing with me has been blown out of all proportion anyway."

I was very happy to read Jonathan Rhys Meyers' comments regarding his sobriety. How
sad to lose his mother, and at such a young age of 50; but, what a great loss that
"could have been", had we lost Jonathan, one of our most enjoyable and interesting
actors, to alcohol.
Bravo, Jonathan! Keep it up, and be selfish when you need to be... put your HEALTH
and happiness first. Your brothers, your beautiful girlfriend and your dedicated
fans need you around for many, many years!!!
This is not something one enters into lightly. The desire to drink is one that can
sneek up on you when you think you have gotten past it . I quit drinking the day
after my 21st birthday and some might say I didn't have time to really know but they
would be wrong. I had been drinking heavily for about 6-7 years at that point. But
when I quit the smell of it would make me sick and I stayed away . Then my father
died and I started with the excuse "Oh this one is just for my dad" And then it became
once a month I'd go to the bar to shoot pool and then it was just one then another
. You can give in so easily and not even notice soon you are back to the way you
were. So to Jonathan I say this be stong in your convictions and remember even if
you ever went to AA or not you will always be in recovery and it is not an easy road
some days. I wish you the best of luck and all the support as a fan I can offer .
Keep up the good work.
