THE SMITHS - MARR BEMOANS MUSIC INDUSTRY

Former THE SMITHS star JOHNNY MARR has hit out at the record industry - insisting Britain and America have failed to make any valuable contributions to music.
The rocker has begun his tenure as a British university lecturer and gave his first class on Tuesday (04Nov08).
And Marr kicked-off his lesson by telling the students of Salford University of his disappointment in the U.S. and U.K. - accusing both countries of hindering musical progress.
He says, "I am really not down on the British music industry. However, it has never created anything in its history. It has never invented anything, although it has done plenty of good things, like good records, but nothing has ever been created of value by the British or American music industries."
