Action film I Am Legend has held on to the top spot at the UK box office for a third consecutive week, new figures show.

The movie, an adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name, stars Will Smith as the last man on Earth - or so he thinks.

With £2 million in box office receipts this week, I Am Legend - having broken the US record for the biggest-ever December opening - has taken its total haul in UK cinemas to £21.9 million.

Romantic comedy PS I Love You, a big screen version of Cecilia Ahern's novel, took second place at the UK and Ireland box office with £1.4 million in ticket sales.

Starring Oscar-winner Hilary Swank and 300 star Gerard Butler, the movie tells of a bereaved woman who begins to receive letters from her late husband instructing her to move on with her life.

Narrowly beaten into third place was Charlie Wilson's War, a political satire from West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin and Mike Nichols, director of The Graduate.

Tom Hanks stars as the eponymous congressman, widely credited with having played a part in the end of the Cold War having hatched a covert scheme to arm Afghanistan against the onslaught of the invading Soviets.

The top five was rounded out by British comedy St Trinian's, which remained in fourth, while Disney's loving pastiche of the fairytale genre, Enchanted, drops two places to fifth.

The top ten movies at the UK box office were:

1 I Am Legend
2 PS I Love You
3 Charlie Wilson's War
4 St Trinian's
5 Enchanted
6 Alvin and the Chipmunks
7 The Golden Compass
