US singer Katy Perry has wrongly been awarded the best international song prize at a French awards show.

The NRJ awards is one of the country's most prestigious shows which picks winners of the awards on the basis of a public vote.

The Hot N Cold star collected the trophy which was supposed to be handed to Rihanna for her hit Disturbia. However, Perry did legitimately win the gong for the best international album for One of the Boys.

At the end of the show, host Nikos Aliagas admitted that a mistake had been made due to a problem in counting the public's vote.

Other winners on the night included Britney Spears, who won the award for best female artist, and Enrique Iglesias who took home the prize for the best international male. The Pussycat Dolls won the award for the best international group.

Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, Duffy, Akon and Seal performed at the show in Cannes.
