HEATH LEDGER - KAPUR: 'LEDGER WANTED ME TO WAKE HIM UP'

HEATH LEDGER made director pal SHEKHAR KAPUR promise to wake him up just hours before he is believed to have taken a fatal drug overdose. Ledger, 28, was found dead in his New York apartment on Tuesday afternoon (22Jan08). Filmmaker Kapur had just arrived in New York from London when he phoned Ledger on Monday evening (21Jan08) to arrange a meeting. And he recalls how the Brokeback Mountain star talked him into giving him a wake up call the next morning. Kapur says, "I last spoke to him the night before he died. He said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day. He made me promise that I would call him in the morning and wake him up. I tried. Little did I know that his soul had already left his body. "He was one of the most gentle, most honest, most caring, and most compassionate persons I had met." An autopsy carried out on Wednesday (23Jan08) failed to determine the actor's cause of death, although police believe it to be drug-related as a number of prescription pills were found around his bed.
