EMMY AWARDS - IDOL PRODUCERS TO TAKE REINS OF EMMY TELECAST

In an apparent effort to draw younger viewers back to the annual Primetime Emmy Awards show, the TV academy has tapped Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick, the executive producers of American Idol, to oversee the 2007 telecast. Last year's telecast, which aired on NBC, saw a significant downturn from 2005 in the number of adults 18-49 who tuned in. However, some TV writers pointed out that the telecast aired in August, when younger viewers are often distracted by summer activities, and that it faced heavy competition from ABC's rebroadcast of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. (NBC had carried the show in August because of its commitment to air Sunday night NFL football in September. This year, the telecast, airing on Sept. 16, will face direct competition from football.)
