Dr Seuss' Horton Hears A Who! has climbed to the top of the UK and Ireland box office chart after its opening weekend on release.

The animated movie, featuring the voice talents of Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Jaime Pressly, took almost £3 million in its first three days on release in the UK to beat The Spiderwick Chronicles, another new entry, into second.

Based on a book by the famed children's author Dr Seuss, Horton Hears a Who! tells of the eponymous elephant (Carrey) who, after hearing a voice from a speck of dust, discovers the tiny world of Whoville.

The 20th Century Fox/Blue Sky Studios release secured the biggest debut of 2008 in the US, surpassing the $41 million (£21 million) earned by monster movie Cloverfield, and has held the number one spot for two weeks.

With several new movies opening over the lucrative Easter weekend, last week's UK number one movie 10,000 BC fell to fifth position.

Dance sequel Step Up 2 The Streets debuted in third while spoof movie Meet the Spartans placed fourth.

Last week's top four films all slipped four places in the chart, with new entries Race and The Orphanage rounding out the top ten.

The top ten films at the UK box office are: (last week's position)

1 Horton Hears A Who! - £2,952,000 (-)
